Thousands of low-income renters are just one missed paycheck away from homelessness. In Clarkston, GA alone, over 44 apartment complexes house thousands of especially vulnerable renters, such as single-parent families, refugees, immigrants, and those who are under-employed, sick, or disabled.
Most renters here spend more than 60% of their income on rent, leaving little for other essentials like food, power, transportation, or medicine. Just one crisis—a medical bill, job loss, or car breakdown—can push families into a traumatic cycle of homelessness.
The children suffer most. Housing instability disrupts their ability to learn and thrive, and when parents lose housing, children are at risk of entering foster care.
While Clarkston is home to many wonderful nonprofits, Clarkston Cares is the only program serving our community with the mission of keeping families housed.
Clarkston Cares exists to prevent families in Clarkston from slipping into cycles of homelessness.
As little as $1,000 can mean the difference between a family entering homelessness, or staying employed, stable, and secure at home. Families in crisis are referred to us by community workers, landlords, and neighbors. After listening to their story, we step in to prevent eviction or loss of essential services. We utilize the power of social networking to fundraise for individual needs, until they are funded. We pay bills directly to landlords or utility companies, bringing immediate relief and peace of mind.
But our impact extends beyond one-time emergency aid. Together, we create a stability plan—strengthening employment, connecting families to supportive relationships, and helping them secure resources and public benefits. We walk alongside them until they are not only stable but thriving—ready to stand tall again and even give back to their community.
Clarkston Cares is powered by donations from people like you—gifts ranging from $25 to $2,500 and beyond. Our monthly donors are the lifeline that keeps families from falling off the cliff of homelessness. That's why we call our monthly donors our Hold the Rope Club. By giving each month, you ensure that vulnerable Clarkston families have the safety net they need to stay housed and stable.
